Reception and Year 1 (Willow Class)

Willow Class Spring 2

Dastardly Dinosaurs has been a fabulous topic to do this half term. It has been an exciting and fun filled 5 weeks where the children have learnt all about the different types of dinosaurs and how to look after them.

In English we looked at the book by Jason Cockcroft, ‘How to look after your dinosaur’. It was a good job too, as a real dinosaur egg was found in our outdoor area! It was very exciting to see the video footage of it’s mum who came to look for him in the playground. We have also been reading non-fiction books about dinosaurs, and the children conducted research to create fact files and a whole class book. We had Troy Jenkinson, a wonderful author come and visit, which inspired us all to write our own little books. The children have also enjoyed World Book Day, reading with lots of different people and we loved our adult visitors in school.

In Maths, the children have learnt about length, weight and capacity. Reception have learnt everything to do with numbers up to 10, thinking more about number bonds, addition and subtraction.

In Science this term, Willow class have learnt about changes in seasons, space and naming and classifying animals. We were lucky enough to have real baby lambs come in and visit us, where we got to hold and feed them. This was also part of our science week. In R.E the children have enjoyed learning about why Easter is special to Christians and Easter traditions. The children learnt about timelines in History and plotted Mary Annings life events.

We have also had a wonderful creative time in Art and Music, learning the skills to use lines when drawing dinosaurs and learning and how to follow rhythm in music. For P.S.H.E this term Willow class have had a project to make £20 grow. After careful planning and brainstorming the children came up with making and decorating coasters and making Easter Cakes. They did an amazing job and definitely made the £20 grow!
