Rocks, Relics and Rumbles – Summer 2

We’ve been exploring the Earth through our topic Rocks, Relics and Rumbles, and the children have loved digging deep into our big question: “What is beneath our feet?”

Our journey started with rocks and soils, where we became scientists and geologists – sorting, classifying and investigating real-life rocks and even discovering how fossils are formed. We got hands-on with rock and soil samples and learned that our planet’s surface is packed with fascinating materials – some crumbly, some sparkly, all unique!

Our Nottingham Caves visit brought our learning to life. Walking through ancient caves and marvelling at underground chambers really helped us imagine what’s going on beneath our feet – and what has been there for thousands of years!

In English, we tapped into our creative side through diamante poetry, crafting beautiful shape poems packed with powerful vocabulary.  

In maths, we tackled shape and measurement, exploring the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, lines of symmetry, and how to measure everything from length and mass to temperature and capacity. Some of us even had a go at measuring perimeter and comparing different units – real-life maths in action!

Over in DT, our focus was on constructing castles. We became designers, builders and problem-solvers, using nets of 2D shapes to create strong, sturdy structures – and learning all about what made castles so clever (and hard to invade!).
